Despite its common name and appearance, heavenly bamboo, Nandina domestica, is not a bamboo, but a relative of Berberis. Nandina domestica ‘Obsessed’ is a compact shrub grown primarily for its foliage, which emerges fiery red before turning fresh green, and then red again as autumn takes hold. In summer, pretty clusters of white flowers add to its appeal.

Nandina are erect, evergreen shrubs with pinnate to 3-pinnate leaves composed of lance-shaped leaflets which colour well in autumn, and panicles of small, star-shaped white flowers, followed by bright red fruits.
